Malti’s Fight – Illiteracy to Independence
“It isn’t always about reading or writing; little things like Life Skills Education reshaped my Life.”
A Simple Wish
One day, I rushed to
Didi, excited. “Didi, I need a phone for work,” I said eagerly. She smiled. “Show me how to use it?” I froze. I couldn’t read or write, and at that moment, I Malti, felt the weight of my illiteracy.
Struggles Before Kshamata
When I arrived at Kshamata Transformation Centre (KTC), illiteracy and poor hygiene held me back. I struggled to find opportunities or care for myself. But life skills education changed everything.
Fight with Literacy and Hygiene
The Kshamata Transformation Program (KTP) team encouraged me to attend literacy sessions and even assigned a tutor. But I wasn’t interested. However, Life Skills Education resonated with me; learning practical lessons on self-care, decision-making, and managing life.
My poor hygiene was another obstacle which led to health issues and isolation. Didi taught me proper hygiene, guiding step by step and correcting my mistakes, and now, I take care of myself and visit doctors regularly.
Transformation Begins
Today, I work as housekeeping staff in a mall, earning ₹15,200 a month. I am punctual, work well with my team, and feel confident. From struggling with basic needs to working independently, my journey has been transformative. I still can’t read or write, but I can follow instructions, manage my health, and stand on my own.
Now my biggest challenge is using a mobile phone, a skill I’m learning from the women at Kshamata’s Group Stay Home.
I am proof that with determination and the right support, anyone can transform their life and ‘I am just getting started’.
