About Us
We walk with her – From Trauma to Transformation Empowering survivors of gender-based violence, trafficking, and vulnerable women.
Not a Victim, But a Survivor - I have the Resilience
A letter to the girl/woman still trapped
Hi, I am Sunita. Once, I stood exactly where you are today, trapped in the vicious circle of abuse and exploitation. At a very tender age, coming face to face with the harsh realities of this world was no easy task.
Like every girl, I had dreams full of happiness and laughter, but all I could see was darkness. Every rescue brought a ray of hope, only to be dispelled by another cycle of abuse.
But then, someone really saw me—not as a Victim, but as a Fighter. This is where Bharathy Didi entered my life. She walked with me through thick and thin, equipped me to fight my way into the world of dignity, courage, and freedom.
Didi realised: rescue wasn’t enough. Reintegration was the key.
And so, Kshamata was born.
A movement, not just an organisation. A commitment to making sure girls like me don’t just survive—we thrive. A mission to replace fear with confidence, dependence with independence, trauma with healing, and despair with dignity.
Kshamata was born to break the cycle of exploitation caused by gender-based violence and human trafficking by ensuring that every girl and woman faced with it receives true refuge—skills, support, and opportunities to rebuild her life.
Today, I stand tall with courage and determination.
And to the girl/woman still waiting in the dark, I have only this to say…
You are not a Victim.
You are not a Burden.
You are a Fighter.
You are a Survivor.
Our Mission
Kshamata reintegrates women and adolescent girls in vulnerable circumstances back into society - equipping them with skills for life and livelihood; empowering them to live independently; and supporting them to build a new life.
Our Vision

Theory of change

“When I look into their eyes, I don’t see a Victim. I see a person trapped in circumstances, looking for someone to trust her power of Resilience.”
Call me a social activist, social worker or a community developer. But my commitment to protection and empowerment of women and children remains unchanged. In my expansive career of 24 years, I was presented with the opportunity to work with some esteemed organisations like UNICEF, Government of India and anti-trafficking NGOs globally.
I got closely associated with those who have been subjected to child abuse, human trafficking, gender-based violence, HIV/ AIDS and many more. They all had one thing in common; the fear of acceptance by society. So early in my career, it became abundantly clear that removing someone from an extremely exploitative situation is only the beginning of a long journey. What comes next is of utmost importance – Rehabilitation and Reintegration.
And Kshamata was my answer to doing this the right way.
This drove me to design a systematic Reintegration and Transformative model of Intervention for women and girls facing or faced gender-based violence. This panned out into an extensive program at Kshamata making sure that these women and girls receive the comprehensive care and training they need to rebuild their lives with an empathetic and empowering approach, keeping them as the centre of everything…
At Kshamata, I envision an enabling guiding path and transformative journey for the voiceless and those vulnerable.
“Small acts of kindness, multiplied by many, can result in a sea of change.”
Alongside being a trustee at Kshamata, I am an entrepreneur with diverse business interests spanning Engineering, Pharmaceuticals, and Consumer Products.
My passion for contributing to society brought me to Kshamta. I bring with me managerial experience and a strong network of industrial contacts, which I actively leverage for developmental initiatives.
With strong commitment to social causes, the aim is to bring meaningful change. I firmly believe that business houses have a responsibility to create innovative solutions for addressing social issues.
“Investing time and resources in women leads to the upliftment of future generations”
An entrepreneur, a philanthropist but above all, a strong believer in social development and community upliftment; that’s how I perceive myself. Having amassed over 24 years of experience in the trading business, I support skill building and economic independence for all.
At Kshamata, every day is a new challenge which requires quick decision making and problem-solving.
As a Trustee, orchestrating my entrepreneurial expertise in business operations, supply chain management, and workforce development gives immense satisfaction.
The organization’s vision of creating sustainable opportunities for women and marginalized communities and its journey towards impact and growth is truly heartwarming.
Leadership
Meet our Team
“Anti-human trafficking and women’s empowerment are not merely professional pursuits for me; they are personal callings.”
With a deep sense of purpose and a strong desire to make a difference, I began my journey in the social sector in 2009. Drawn to causes that championed the rights of society’s most vulnerable, I found myself focused on women suffering from exploitation and trafficking.
This passion led me to significant roles, including serving as Program Director at Apne Aap Women’s Collective and as Program Officer at Tata Institute of Social Sciences in collaboration with the Maharashtra State Rural Livelihoods Mission. In these positions, I focused on the women and children impacted by human trafficking, developing interventions with the potential for nationwide replication.
At Kshamata, I was presented with the opportunity to further leverage my experience and strengths to drive impactful change. Whether through strategic planning, project design and execution, multi-stakeholder engagement, or research analysis, each project has served as a gateway to tangible, meaningful transformation.
What continues to fuel my journey is the profound belief that every step, no matter how small, is part of a greater effort to create a safer and more just world for women and girls.
“Working hands-on in the field or guiding teams from a managerial position, true impact requires both perspectives.”
For me, working in the development sector is a lifelong commitment to programs that create real, sustainable change in people’s lives.
My 20-years career has taken me from corporates to NGOs, and social enterprises to community-based projects. Each experience has added a new layer of understanding to the realities of grassroots work.
Equipped with strategic vision, at Kshamata I undertake a wide array of responsibilities, including project management, budgeting, impact assessment, reporting, team leadership, donor management, and government liaison.
I truly believe in the power of partnerships. Whether it’s fostering relationships with stakeholders, mentoring talent within teams, or collaborating with government bodies, every connection strengthens the organisation’s mission.
“It’s not just about managing tasks; it’s about weaving together different threads of finance, administration, and people into one thriving organisation.”
Balancing diverse responsibilities, which comes not just with experience but with sharp analytical thinking, strong problem-solving abilities, and an unwavering eye for detail. This is what defines my role at Kshamata.
When I first stepped into Kshamata, I knew I wasn’t just walking into a regular organisation – I was stepping into a space where every process, every number, and every person mattered deeply.
Here, I spearhead the accounts and administration department with focus on the smooth functioning of financial operations, adherence to regulatory frameworks, and seamless execution of administrative functions.
But my role doesn’t stop here. Early on, I realised that the true strength of Kshamata lies in its people and took on the human resources function. From processing payrolls to recruiting new members and planning engagement initiatives, every task is an opportunity to nurture a balanced workforce. In my 15 years of experience, I have witnessed how a well-supported employee becomes an unstoppable force.
“Every woman deserves respect, opportunities, and the freedom to rebuild her life on her own terms.”
For over three decades, my journey in social work is based on the belief that societal change begins with empowering the most marginalized. Equipped with a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, I have navigated the complexities of gender dynamics.
Having personally faced challenges within the patriarchal system, I remain keen on changing societal perspectives towards women.
Building strong collaborations with government stakeholders, particularly in the shelter home system has been my area of expertise. These partnerships ensure that women in vulnerable situations receive the support and protection they deserve.
At Kshamata, my work centres around facilitating court orders for High Individual Risk (HIR) cases, supporting women in giving their statements, and walking alongside them as they reintegrate into society.
Every woman I work with carries a story of strength and resilience, and its heartwarming to see them reclaim their lives, step by step.
“Social work is not merely a profession; it is a lifelong mission.”
My journey as a social worker and community development professional spans across two decades. I strongly believe that every individual deserves dignity, opportunity, and a chance to lead a life of self-reliance.
Since my growing years, I was always aware of the challenges faced by marginalized communities, particularly women and children. This led to pursuing a Master’s degree in Social Work, specializing in Family and Child Welfare from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS). I further strengthened my knowledge through training in social entrepreneurship and public relations.
Working closely with some of the most vulnerable sections from slums and brothels to orphaned children, senior citizens, and at-risk women, made me realise that not just resilience but an all-encompassing support system is also of equal importance.
As the Livelihood & Training Officer at Kshamata, my focus is on empowering women and children through livelihood initiatives, vocational training, and rehabilitation programs. I work hand-in-hand with survivors, guiding them toward sustainable income opportunities and helping them rebuild their lives.
Every woman and child I interact with, carries a story of struggle and strength. My mission is to ensure that they come out shining with hope, growth, and independence.
“A positive mindset combined with thoughtful leadership has the power to transform not just systems, but people.”
If I had to define myself in three words, they would be positivity, adaptability, and resilience. These aren’t just traits, they are qualities I have nurtured throughout my 14-year career, guiding me to lead, collaborate, and contribute.
My current position as Operations Manager at Kshamata, completely aligns with my philosophy. My focus lies in helping the organization achieve its goals while creating a system that supports both the mission and the people behind it.
I work closely with each department, reorganizing workflows, redistributing responsibilities, and introducing simple data-driven tools to monitor progress.
The ability to step back and assess the situation, keeping in mind the bigger picture, has been helpful towards the larger mission of Kshamata.
“Emotional well-being and support can completely alter the course of someone’s life.”
Youth education, emotional well-being, behavioural development, sexual counselling, and psychological guidance are not just words. They are causes that have shaped my purpose of work for over 15 years.
My academic journey, which includes a Ph.D. in Social Work, along with an MSW, B.Ed., and M.A. in Sociology, laid a strong foundation for my over 15 years of career. All the theories came alive when I started working directly with young people, thus understanding their struggles, aspirations, and the unique circumstances they navigate every day.
Over time, the work expanded beyond youth to include marginalized and transgender communities. This is where realizations struck, how critical it is to not just offer support but also advocate a systemic change that often leaves them overlooked.
One of the roles closest to my heart has been leading initiatives under Ekal Mahila Sanghatana. Here, I had the privilege of supporting single women, navigating them through job support, legal aid, self-help groups, and empowerment programs.
Whether through counselling sessions, educational programs, or behavioural interventions, the journey continues to be driven by the desire to uplift, guide, and advocate for those who need a voice.
Kshamata has reinforced my belief that empowerment begins with giving people the tools and confidence to take control.

On January 11th, 2025, Kshamata hosted ‘Connected for Change: A Celebration of Collaboration’, an event focused on recognizing the collective role and importance of partnerships. We felicitated our development partners for their support and involvement in Kshamata’s journey of changing lives. We also honoured our women, who shared inspiring stories of resilience and highlighted their transformative journeys towards independence.
Rather than celebrating 10 years of Kshamata as just an anniversary, we chose to celebrate the spirit of collaboration — recognizing the vital role our volunteers and partner organizations have played in shaping this journey.
