Break the Bloody Silence!

Menstruation is natural. But for millions of girls and women across India, it remains wrapped in shame, silence, and stigma. At Kshamata, we say: Break the Bloody Silence.

Every year, Kshamata works with hundreds of women and adolescent girls who are survivors of gender-based violence, exploitation, or trafficking. Many arrive at our centres from government shelter homes or partner NGOs, carrying with them not just emotional and physical trauma, but also a lack of basic awareness about health, hygiene, and bodily autonomy—including menstrual health.

Why Menstrual Health Matters at Kshamata

One of our first priorities when a new participant joins is to ensure a thorough health check-up. But beyond physical wellbeing, we focus on holistic awareness. Our Life Skills sessions include essential conversations on menstrual hygiene, body literacy, and breaking taboos.

These sessions do more than teach—they restore confidence. For many of our girls, it’s the first time someone has spoken to them openly and respectfully about their periods. For some, it’s the first time they’ve been provided sanitary products without judgment or shame.

In Indian society, menstruation is often cloaked in harmful myths—from being “impure” to being excluded from daily life. These beliefs disproportionately affect vulnerable girls and women, limiting their participation in education, work, and even their ability to seek support or healing.

At Kshamata, we challenge these norms head-on. We believe that breaking menstrual taboos is an essential step toward breaking cycles of exploitation and silence. Empowering women means giving them the tools and voice to take control of their lives, and that starts with their physical health.

Our mission is to engage, equip, and empower women for reintegration into society. A world that shames periods cannot be a world where women thrive. That’s why menstrual health is not a side note—it’s integral to our work in restoring self-worth and rebuilding lives.

We provide:

  • Access to sanitary/ hygiene products
  • Safe spaces for open discussion
  • Educational sessions on reproductive and menstrual health
  • Support to build healthy habits and self-care routines

Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld

This Menstrual Hygiene Week, we stand with every girl who has ever felt ashamed, every woman who has suffered in silence, and every survivor who is reclaiming her voice.

We invite you to join us. Talk about periods. Normalize the conversation. Share the message.

Because at Kshamata, we believe real transformation begins when we stop whispering and start breaking the bloody silence.
